It is my pleasure to welcome you to Southern University Laboratory School’s website! We invite you to explore our virtual world and discover how much the Lab has to offer in our academic curriculum, athletics, performing and visual arts, community service and extracurricular activities.
— Herman Brister, Director

Scholarship, Legacy, Family, and Championship Spirit are ingrained in the DNA of Southern University Laboratory School. Founded in 1922 as a training ground for Southern University, the Laboratory School has been a pillar in the Baton Rouge community.   Our school promotes a community where scholars discover and develop to the fullness of their own unique capacity. Students are invited to experience education through dynamic instruction, self-directed exploration, and creative activity. Today we are proud of the spirited way our students and alumni continue to embody and further these ideals.

Our parents overwhelmingly believe that their children are happy to attend school each day and that they are accepted by their peers. They also comment on how the teachers care for their children not only in the classroom but outside as well.

As a college preparatory school, our academic program challenges, supports, and inspires its students. The learning experience at SULS promotes a culture where they sharpen their skills and discipline not only to succeed at their next level of education, but also to pursue their individual talents and interests.

The Laboratory School is also an intimate place that is enriched in student engagement and connection. In our comparatively small learning community, students are called to grow as responsible citizens. SULS’s music, athletics, and service programs depend on the enthusiastic participation and leadership of its students to flourish into award winning programs while forming friendships and bonds that will endure for a lifetime.

Our students are guided, encouraged, and challenged by talented, dedicated faculty. I continue to be impressed with the committed and devoted men and women who teach  our students not only how to succeed in the classroom but in life. I am so very honored to work with these dedicated educators, and consider it a great privilege to be able to support their endeavors.

As Director it is an honor to interact with individuals across the nation who know, honor, and respect our school. This is due to our proud history, dedicated faculty, and accomplished alumni. I am blessed to serve Southern University and the Laboratory school at this critical point of our history. We invite you to explore our website and visit our great school. In doing so you will realize that we are more than a school. We are a family where its heritage and legacy are deeply rooted into its DNA, and our students embrace the challenge of growing into responsible citizens who will make an impact in their community.

Sincerely,

Herman R. Brister ’97
